  • Not a contraception method: Calendar-based contraception has a 20-25% failure rate. Relying solely on this method may lead to unintended pregnancy.
  • ⚠️ Predictions may vary: Ovulation timing can change due to stress, illness, travel, medications, and other factors. Predictions are based on average values.
  • 🏥 Seek medical care for irregular cycles: If your cycle is irregular (<21 or >35 days), heavy/light bleeding, or severe cramps, consult a gynecologist.
  • 📋 Fertility advice: If trying to conceive for over 12 months (6 months if age 35+) without success, both partners should undergo fertility evaluation.

If you have any health concerns, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.

About Period Calculator

Period Calculator is a free online tool that helps women accurately track menstrual cycles, predict ovulation dates and fertile windows. By entering the first day of your last period and average cycle length, the system automatically calculates next period date, ovulation day, fertile period and other important information, with predictions for the coming months.

This calculator is perfect for women who want to understand their menstrual cycles, whether for conception planning, contraception management, or simply monitoring their health. It provides scientifically accurate predictions and is the best assistant for women's health management.

How is Period Calculated?

Period calculation uses standard physiological cycle formulas:

  • Next Period = First day of last period + Cycle length (usually 28 days)
  • Ovulation Day = First day of next period - 14 days (luteal phase is fixed at 14 days)
  • Fertile Window = 5 days before ovulation to 1 day after ovulation (7 days total)
  • Conception Probability = Calculated based on days from ovulation, highest on ovulation day (33%)
  • Safe Period = Time excluding menstruation and fertile window (but not absolutely safe)

Example: If last period started on 10/21/2025 with 28-day cycle, next period is 11/18/2025, ovulation day is 11/04/2025 (11/18 - 14 days), fertile window is 10/30/2025 ~ 11/05/2025.

How to Use This Calculator?

  1. Enter First Day of Last Period: Select the date your last period began
  2. Enter Average Cycle Length: Usually 28 days, normal range 21-35 days
  3. Enter Period Length: Number of days menstruation lasts, usually 5 days, normal range 3-7 days
  4. View Results: System automatically calculates next period, ovulation day, fertile period
  5. Reference Calendar Visualization: Intuitively understand distribution of period, ovulation, and safe days
  6. Check Future Predictions: View period predictions for next 3-6 months

Four Phases of Menstrual Cycle

Menstruation Phase

Menstruation usually lasts 3-7 days as the uterine lining sheds. Estrogen and progesterone levels are lowest, possibly causing cramps, fatigue, and mood changes. Rest more, supplement iron, and avoid intense exercise.

Follicular Phase

From end of period to ovulation, lasting about 7-10 days. Ovarian follicles develop, estrogen rises, uterine lining thickens for conception. Energy is high, skin looks good, mood is stable - great time for exercise and work.

Ovulation Phase

1-2 days around ovulation day, mature egg released from ovary, highest conception probability (up to 33%). Estrogen peaks, may have mild abdominal pain, increased discharge (clear and stretchy), slight temperature rise. Best time for conception planning.

Luteal Phase

From ovulation to next period, fixed at 14 days. Progesterone rises to maintain uterine lining thickness. If not pregnant, corpus luteum degenerates, hormones drop, lining sheds into next period. May have PMS including breast tenderness, mood swings, bloating.

Conception Probability Explanation

Conception probability varies based on days from ovulation:

  • Ovulation Day: Conception probability is highest (about 33%)
  • 1 Day Before Ovulation: Conception probability about 31%
  • 2 Days Before Ovulation: Conception probability about 30%
  • 3 Days Before Ovulation: Conception probability about 27%
  • 4-5 Days Before Ovulation: Conception probability about 10-16%
  • After Ovulation: Probability drops sharply once the egg expires (~24 hours), then near zero
  • Safe Period (outside fertile window): Conception probability below 2%

Sperm can survive 5 days in the body, egg survives 24 hours after release, so fertile window is 5 days before to 1 day after ovulation (7 days total). Safe period excludes menstruation and fertile window, but since ovulation timing can shift due to various factors, safe period is not absolutely safe.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is period calculation accurate?

A: Period calculation is based on standard physiological cycle formulas and is fairly accurate for women with regular cycles. However, individual cycles can be affected by stress, diet, exercise, illness and other factors. If cycle is irregular (varies by more than 7 days monthly), consult a gynecologist and consider using ovulation test strips.

Q: Is the safe period really safe?

A: Calendar-based contraception (natural family planning) has a high failure rate and is not recommended as the sole contraception method. Even during the so-called "safe period", pregnancy is possible due to early or late ovulation. If you don't want to become pregnant, use condoms, birth control pills or other more reliable methods.

Q: How to improve conception chances?

A: If planning conception, increase intercourse frequency 2-3 days before to day of ovulation. Use ovulation test strips to confirm ovulation (tests luteinizing hormone LH in urine), or observe basal body temperature changes (temperature rises 0.3-0.5°C after ovulation). Also maintain healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, moderate exercise, and avoid stress.

Q: What about irregular menstrual cycles?

A: Irregular cycles can have various causes including PCOS, thyroid issues, stress, significant weight changes. If period frequently comes more than 7 days early or late, or no period for 3+ months (not pregnant), seek medical examination early. Doctor may perform hormone tests, ultrasound to find cause and provide appropriate treatment.

Q: Should I worry about periods too long or too short?

A: Normal period length is 3-7 days. If period is less than 2 days or more than 8 days for several consecutive months, consult a gynecologist. Short periods may relate to hormone deficiency or thin uterine lining; long periods may relate to uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or hormone imbalance. Also seek medical attention if flow is too heavy (changing pad every 1-2 hours) or too light.

Q: Can stress affect menstruation?

A: Yes. Stress affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, causing delayed or absent ovulation, leading to delayed or missed periods. Chronic stress can also cause irregular cycles. Reduce stress through exercise, meditation, adequate sleep. If stress continues to affect menstruation, consult a doctor.
