Weight Category Comparison
Bar chart comparing the length per 100g of 8 CYC yarn weight categories, from Lace (longest) to Jumbo (shortest).
Fiber density affects the length per 100g. Cotton and linen are heavier (shorter length); silk and mohair are lighter (longer length). Blends depend on their fiber ratio.

CYC Yarn Weight Standard
The Craft Yarn Council (CYC) is the authoritative organization for the American yarn industry, establishing internationally recognized yarn weight classification standards. From the finest Lace (0) to the thickest Jumbo (7), each category has corresponding "length per 100g" and "Wraps Per Inch (WPI)" standards.
Tips
- Always make a swatch to confirm actual gauge before starting your project
- Different brands of the same weight category may vary; check the actual data on the label
- Blended yarns may convert differently than pure fibers
- Use the "Custom Value" option if you know the exact per-100g ratio
FAQ
What is WPI?
WPI (Wraps Per Inch) measures yarn thickness by counting how many times yarn wraps around a ruler within one inch. Higher WPI means thinner yarn.
Why does material affect conversion?
Different fibers have different densities. Cotton is heavier than wool, so 100g of cotton yarn is shorter than wool. Mohair is very fluffy and light, so the same weight yields much more length.
How to choose the right yarn weight?
Choose based on project type: Lace/Fingering for shawls, Fingering/Sport for socks, DK/Worsted for sweaters, Bulky/Super Bulky for hats and scarves.
